"Sensitivity" and "allergy" get used interchangeably, but they are different things — and the distinction is genuinely useful once you know it.
A food allergy is an immune reaction. It needs prior exposure to develop, and once established it can be set off by tiny amounts. A food intolerance involves no immune system at all — it is a digestive or metabolic problem, like the enzyme shortfall behind lactose intolerance, or a reaction to naturally occurring compounds in certain ingredients. Because there is no immune memory involved, intolerance can show up the very first time a dog eats something, and it tends to be dose-dependent: a small amount is tolerated, a large one is not.
Both sit under the umbrella of adverse food reactions, and in dogs they overwhelmingly show up in the gut. Among dogs whose food reactions were recorded individually, 93% had diarrhoea and only 2% vomited — the reverse of the pattern in cats.
Here is the honest limitation: there is no test that separates intolerance from allergy, and no blood, saliva or hair panel reliably identifies either. Both are worked out the same way, by removing the suspect food and seeing what changes. The practical difference is that intolerance often responds to a more digestible food or a smaller portion of the offending ingredient, while a true allergy requires avoiding it completely.
Signs to Watch For
In dogs, food intolerance is mostly a digestive story. Watch for:
- Loose stools or diarrhoea — by far the most common sign, at 70-88%
- More frequent defecation, or urgency
- Excess wind and audible gut noise
- Occasional vomiting — less common in dogs than cats, at 5-21%
- Signs that track with portion size, or with one particular food or treat
When to see your vet
See your vet if there is blood in the stool, ongoing weight loss, repeated vomiting, or if a puppy is affected. Chronic diarrhoea has causes well beyond diet, and a food trial should not delay investigating those. Guidance is to consider an elimination diet early in the work-up of chronic vomiting and diarrhoea rather than as a last resort.
What to Look For
High digestibility
Intolerance is fundamentally a digestion problem. Highly digestible protein and carbohydrate sources reduce what reaches the large intestine to ferment, which is where the wind and loose stools come from.
Short ingredient lists
Fewer ingredients means fewer suspects. It also makes it realistic to identify the specific trigger later, instead of permanently avoiding a long list on suspicion.
Moderate, quality fat
Fat intolerance is a common and under-recognised cause of loose stools. A leaner formula is worth trying before concluding a protein is to blame.
Consistency over variety
Rotating foods and handing out varied treats makes it impossible to see a pattern. Feeding one thing for a few weeks is often more informative than any product change.
How We Chose These Foods
We started with the 4,315 dog foods in our database and kept only foods tagged Food Sensitivities, using the same filter engine as our Food Navigator. That left 808 matching foods. The 100 highest-rated matches are shown below, ordered by average customer rating. No brand pays for placement. The allergy-risk score estimates how likely each food is to contain common allergy triggers, so you can weigh it alongside ingredients and price.

What is the difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity?
A food allergy is an immune reaction that requires prior exposure and can be triggered by minute amounts. A food intolerance is non-immune — a digestive or metabolic problem — so it can occur on first exposure and is usually dose-dependent. Both are adverse food reactions.
Can I test my dog for food sensitivities?
Not reliably. Serum, saliva and hair tests do not consistently correspond to real reactions, and no test distinguishes intolerance from allergy. Both are identified by removing the suspect food and observing the response.
What are the signs of food intolerance in dogs?
Digestive signs dominate. Among dogs with individually reported food-reaction signs, 93% had diarrhoea and 2% vomited. Wind, urgency and more frequent stools are common, and signs often scale with how much of the food was eaten.
Does my dog need a grain-free food?
Probably not. Grain is a far less common trigger than animal protein, and going grain-free while keeping the same protein rarely changes anything. Digestibility and fat level are usually more productive things to adjust.
