Fish-Free Dog Foods

Fish allergy is uncommon in dogs, around 2% of documented reactions, but the dogs that have it face an unusually leaky label: fish oil appears in over 1,200 of our catalogued foods, most of them beef, chicken and lamb recipes that never mention fish up front. A fish-free list that only checks the headline protein is not fish-free.

The word "fish" is also not enough. A food listing herring, salmon meal and whitefish contains no ingredient with the letters f-i-s-h in it, so this list filters on the full fish family: salmon, tuna, herring, menhaden, whitefish and twenty more species names, plus shellfish, plus fish oil and fish broth. If it swims, it is excluded.
