Food sensitivity and food allergy are often treated as the same thing. They are not, and the difference is worth understanding before you change anything.
A food allergy is an immune reaction — it needs prior exposure and can be provoked by very small amounts. A food intolerance has nothing to do with the immune system; it is a digestive or metabolic issue, such as the enzyme shortfall behind lactose intolerance. That means intolerance can appear the first time a cat eats something, and it is generally dose-dependent — a little is fine, a lot is not.
Cats present differently from dogs here, and it is a real difference rather than a nuance. Vomiting is much more prominent in cats: among cats with individually reported food-reaction signs, 38% vomited and 45% had diarrhoea, compared with 2% and 93% in dogs. Persistent vomiting in a cat should not be written off as normal.
The honest limitation: no blood, saliva or hair test reliably identifies either intolerance or allergy, and none separates the two. Both are worked out by removing the suspect food. Veterinary guidance is to consider an elimination diet early in the work-up of chronic vomiting and diarrhoea, not after everything else has failed.
Signs to Watch For
In cats, food reactions are as likely to come up as to go through. Watch for:
- Vomiting — reported in 29-52% of cats with food-related signs, far more than in dogs
- Diarrhoea or persistently soft stools (28-55%)
- Vomiting shortly after eating, or repeatedly with one particular food
- Wind, gurgling, or discomfort after meals
- Gradual weight loss or a dull coat despite a normal appetite
When to see your vet
Frequent vomiting in cats is often normalised as "just a sensitive cat" or blamed on hairballs, but repeated vomiting is not normal. See your vet if there is weight loss, blood, lethargy, or if vomiting happens more than about once a week — and rule out hyperthyroidism and kidney disease, which produce similar signs in older cats.
What to Look For
High digestibility
The core issue is the gut struggling with what it is given. Highly digestible protein means less residue fermenting further down, which is what produces the wind and loose stools.
Short ingredient lists
Fewer ingredients means fewer suspects, and a realistic chance of identifying the actual trigger rather than permanently avoiding a long list of maybes.
Consider wet food
Higher moisture supports digestion and hydration, and many cats tolerate wet food better. It also helps with the low thirst drive cats have generally.
Skip the milk
Most adult cats lose much of their ability to digest lactose, so cow's milk is a textbook intolerance rather than an allergy — and a common, avoidable cause of loose stools.
How We Chose These Foods
We started with the 2,687 cat foods in our database and kept only foods tagged Food Sensitivities, using the same filter engine as our Food Navigator. That left 388 matching foods. The 100 highest-rated matches are shown below, ordered by average customer rating. No brand pays for placement. The allergy-risk score estimates how likely each food is to contain common allergy triggers, so you can weigh it alongside ingredients and price.

Medium riskFrequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity in cats?
An allergy is an immune reaction requiring prior exposure, triggered by even small amounts. An intolerance is non-immune — digestive or metabolic — so it can happen on first exposure and usually depends on how much was eaten.
Is it normal for my cat to vomit regularly?
No. It is common, which is not the same thing. Vomiting is reported in 29-52% of cats with food-related signs, and regular vomiting is worth investigating rather than accepting — especially if it is being attributed to hairballs by default.
Can I test my cat for food sensitivities?
Not reliably. Serum, saliva and hair testing do not consistently match real reactions, and no test separates intolerance from allergy. A controlled diet change remains the only dependable approach.
Can cats be lactose intolerant?
Yes, and most adult cats are to some degree — they lose much of the lactase needed to digest milk sugar after kittenhood. It is a clear example of intolerance rather than allergy, and cow's milk is best avoided.
