Lamb causes about 5% of documented food reactions in dogs, and it hides in an ironic place: the gentle aisle. Two decades of lamb-and-rice "sensitive" formulas mean the foods marketed at itchy dogs are disproportionately the ones a lamb-allergic dog must avoid.
The foods below are screened for lamb in every form we track: lamb meal, lamb liver, heart, kidney, lung, green tripe and mutton, which is adult lamb by another name and never says lamb on the label.
One caution for the switch: lamb and beef are both ruminants with similar proteins, and cross-reaction happens often enough that many vets trial away from both together. Our beef-free list covers the other half, and if you are still confirming the trigger, start with our lamb allergy guide.
What to Look For
Mutton never says lamb
Mutton is catalogued as its own ingredient with no lamb in the name. It is the same animal; this list excludes it.
The sensitive aisle is lamb country
Lamb-and-rice built its reputation as the gentle formula, so "sensitive" ranges are exactly where a lamb-allergic dog meets the most lamb.
Consider trialing beef away too
Ruminant proteins resemble each other, and lamb-reactive dogs cross-react with beef often enough that excluding both gives the cleaner trial.
Lamb chews count
Lamb lung and lamb ear treats are popular single-ingredient chews. During a trial, they count exactly as much as the bowl does.
How We Chose These Foods
We started with the 4,315 dog foods in our database and removed every food with lamb or mutton anywhere in its full ingredient list, using the same filter engine as our Food Navigator. That left 3,309 matching foods. The 100 highest-rated matches are shown below, ordered by average customer rating. No brand pays for placement. The allergy-risk score estimates how likely each food is to contain common allergy triggers, so you can weigh it alongside ingredients and price.

What should I feed a dog allergic to lamb?
A food built on a protein your dog has little history with, screened so no lamb organ meats or mutton appear anywhere in the list. Many vets also keep beef out during the trial, since the two cross-react.
Isn't lamb hypoallergenic?
Only historically. Lamb was safe when dogs had never eaten it; after twenty years as a staple it causes about 5% of documented reactions. No protein is hypoallergenic to a dog that eats it daily.
Is mutton the same as lamb for allergies?
Yes. Mutton is meat from adult sheep, the same species and closely similar proteins, so a lamb-allergic dog should avoid it. It is excluded from every food on this list.
