Pure Protein Topper- Chunks of Real Tuna in Gravy, . ingredients, explained
The recipe is built on tuna, listed second on the label. Common dog food allergens on the label: tuna.
What this food is made of
A fish used mostly in cat foods, where its strong flavor is the point. Tuna is a good protein and a source of omega-3 fats. Two cautions apply to tuna fed often: it is higher in mercury than smaller fish, and cats can become fixated on it and refuse other foods. Both cautions apply to the cat eating tuna every day, and much less to tuna as one ingredient in a complete food fed in rotation.
Starch from the cassava root, used to bind kibble and as a carbohydrate source, especially in grain-free foods. It is nearly pure starch with little protein, fiber or micronutrients, and it is one of the least likely ingredients to trigger an allergy. A food that leans on tapioca for carbohydrate is getting easy digestibility and little else from it, which is fine as long as the rest of the recipe carries the nutrition.
Vitamins, minerals and additives (5)
The nutrient pack nearly every complete food carries. Expand to read what each one does.
Water added during the making of wet food, listed as 'water sufficient for processing'. It is there to form the gravy or loaf and to cook the ingredients, and it is why wet food is around 75 to 80 percent moisture. For cats, that moisture is the main nutritional argument for wet food, since many cats drink little on their own. It is sometimes called a filler. Wet food cannot be made without it.
A thickener from the guar bean, used to give wet food its texture and hold gravy together. It is a soluble fiber, and in large amounts it can soften stool. Not an allergen of note. Its presence tells you about texture, not nutrition.
An amino acid cats cannot make in sufficient quantity and must eat, or they develop heart disease and blindness. It is in every complete cat food by law of nutrition, not by choice. Dogs make their own, but it is added to many dog foods as a precaution after a federal investigation into diet-associated heart disease in dogs. Its presence on a dog food label is a good sign, not a warning.
A fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cells and the fats in the food itself. It is in nearly every complete food, both as a nutrient and, under the name mixed tocopherols, as the natural preservative that keeps fat from going rancid. Deficiency is rare in pets eating a complete diet. Nothing to worry about on a label, and a sign the maker is preserving with vitamin E rather than synthetic chemicals.
A thickener made by fermenting sugar with a bacterium. It gives wet foods their gravy and keeps ingredients from separating in the can or pouch. It has no nutritional role, is not digested, and is used in very small amounts. Pets on a strict elimination diet may be asked to avoid gums, which is about keeping the diet simple. The gum itself is not a hazard.
