Pro Plan Prime Plus Senior 7+ Salmon & Tuna Wet Cat Food ingredients, explained

The recipe is built on salmon, the first ingredient on the label. Common cat food allergens on the label: salmon. Omega-3 comes from fish oil, the form cats use directly.

What this food is made of

Salmon

A fatty fish used as a protein source and as a natural source of omega-3 fats. Fresh salmon is mostly water, so a salmon meal lower on the list may be contributing more protein. Salmon is a common alternative protein for pets that react to chicken or beef, though fish allergies exist too. Farmed and wild salmon differ in fat profile, and labels rarely say which.

Liver

Organ meat from the named animal, or unnamed when the label just says liver. Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods there is, rich in vitamin A, copper, iron and the B group, and most pets love the taste, which is why it is used both as an ingredient and as a flavor coating. For allergies, the species is what matters, and beef liver is beef. Unnamed liver can come from any species and may vary by batch.

Soybean oil

Oil pressed from soybeans, added as a cheap, stable source of the omega-6 fat linoleic acid. It is one of the most common fats in both human and pet food. The oil contains almost none of the soy protein that causes allergies, so it is generally tolerated even by pets that react to soy, though strict elimination diets may still avoid it. Its omega-3 is the plant form, which pets convert poorly, so it does not stand in for fish oil.

Tuna

A fish used mostly in cat foods, where its strong flavor is the point. Tuna is a good protein and a source of omega-3 fats. Two cautions apply to tuna fed often: it is higher in mercury than smaller fish, and cats can become fixated on it and refuse other foods. Both cautions apply to the cat eating tuna every day, and much less to tuna as one ingredient in a complete food fed in rotation.

Fish oil

Oil pressed from whole fish, usually menhaden, herring or sardine, added as the source of the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. Those fats support skin, coat, joints and brain development, and a food that names fish oil is delivering them in the form pets use directly. It goes rancid quickly, so look for a preservative named alongside it, usually mixed tocopherols. The species is rarely stated, which matters only if your pet reacts to fish.
